6 Reviews of the River 240
By: Bogratncookie Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
I purchased a River 240 when they were flogging them for £25 in Argos, so that I could take my 2 kids away in the hols while hubby is at work.
On the plus side, it is an absolute doddle to put up (a big plus when you have no help!), we've had no leaks, and has a handy porch area. And I can get it back into the bag when we're packing up!
On the downside, listing it as a 4 berth is being a bit optimistic. Me and 2 kids on a double airbed pretty much fills it. It would only be 4 berth if you were on camping mats sleeping like sardines. Also, I have my doubts as to how long the ties/zips will last as they don't seem to be particularly well made, but that's what you get for £25!
All in all a good little tent for short breaks. Cheap and cheerful :)

I wanted a decent size tent to take my girlfriend away camping in. Unfortunately she doesn't do camping. My girlfriend works for Argos and so was able to get the tent for around £20. We purchased it and I couldn't believe how good the tent was for the money we paid. We stayed in mid Wales and we had horrendous weather. It was really windy and we had heavy showers on the first day. The tent didn't leak once and when we returned later in the day after the bad weather had passed it was still standing.
The only downside to the tent I found was, you have to erect the inner first. I prefer to erect the flysheet first as I feel you get better protection from the elements as the outer is even on all sides.

Like other reviewers, I bought my tent from Argos when it was half price at £25 having not been camping since I was about 12 (many moons ago!) I thought for that price it wouldn't matter if I only used it once.
The first time I used it was just outside Brighton, me and the dog. With my son and his friend in other small tents on the next pitch.
It is so easy to put up, completely idiot proof. You simply can't get it wrong. The front porch bit was big enough to put the coolbox on one side and the general big camping box on the other so I had the full space inside for my sleeping bag and clothes etc. I'm only 5ft4, and it wasn't tall enough to stand up in, but I didn't really find that to be an issue. It didn't feel cramped in any way.
It was sweltering hot when I first used it, but it seemed to stay quite cool inside, not that I was inside it much in the day. Having the two air vents definitely helps keep a little air moving.
The second time I used it, it lashed with rain and was quite windy during the night and I was completely dry and cosy - well, at least until the very wet dog sneaked in!
It's a bit of a squeeze getting it in the bag and in fact, part of the sewing of the zip tore, but there IS a knack to it and it does go in. I find that I fold it longways, sides to middle, then in half, with the two sheets together, and then roll it up VERY tightly, and it goes in OK.
Although it's technically 4 man, I wouldn't think it would be comfy for any more than 2 adults. It was a great size for me and a large hairy dog but like caravans etc ' 4 berth' would have been an uncomfortable squeeze.
I don't know how it would stand up to serious winter camping, but certainly for my 'easy' camping, it was fantastic.

My partner and I spotted this in the sale brochure of the local argos and thought it was a bargain price for a 4 man tent. We paid £24.45 in april/may this year. It is used for me, my partner and our son.
We are very new to camping and used it for one night to test it out a local campsite that our family were staying at. It was very very easy to put up as other campers have described. It took us half an hour the first time and the instructions were very clear.
We fitted a double airbed and a single airbed in the bed area and left our belongings in the porch area. There was no room left in this area once we had the beds in but this was fine as we only wanted it as somewhere to lay down. My partner is 5ft 9 in and we laid the airbed so that our feet were at the door end, in the morning he complained that there was not enough room to stretch out. I looked at the tent and thought all sides were the same- apparently not. My father in law suggested turning the airbed the other way and laying on it and much to our surprise when we did this there was slightly more room for him to stretch out in!
We have just got back from the New forest where we stayed two nights and this tent was perfect for us. It had more than enough room for what we needed and we managed to sit snuggly in the proch with two chairs and all our belongings.
Whilst in the new forest it rained one night and some of the next day and we stayed very dry in the tent, the top cover kept the rain off. We found the top cover was a snug fit but did the job well. As long as you tie it to the middle before pegging you get a perfect even fit (i forgot to tie it first time much to my partners annoyance when he couldnt get it even LOL)
This is a perfect tent for first time campers, copules, teenagers and lone campers. It is fantastic value even if you pay full price.
We have lovely friend who have all donated camping equipment and materials our way which included a massive gazebo and windbreaks and using these we managed to make ourselves a lovely cosy little home for our camping trip. (hopefully I will be able to upload the pics and you will see what we did). This allowed us to extend the tent and have a little outside area.
We will continue to use this tent until we have saved enough money for a bigger one, the only reason we will upgrade is because we would like to be able to stand up in the tent as all the crouching is making our old bones a bit creaky! We may even keep this as a spare for when our son is a little older and wants his own space!

Me and jacob are pretty new to camping and found this tent in Argos for just £24.99!. We have used it 3 times and found it to be superb for our purposes, that being some trips away for 2-3 days at a time for quality Dad and Son time together. It takes about 5-10 mins to put up with only 3 poles, it has a handy little porch area with a zip up door followed by and zipped door to the sleeping area that incorporates a fly screen. The sleeping area is fine for the 2 of us but would not want to have any more in there, it would be too cramped (we like our space!) I can fit the double airbed in which leaves space either side for your bits and pieces. There are 2 vents and pockets sewn in for your watch and torch. Hanging loops are great for the lamps and the tent feels light and airy.
We recently camped in Plymouth and it absolutely hammered it down with rain, for 2 days the tent stayed dry but on the 3rd day a few drops made their way into the sleeping area, we then decided to pack up and go home. However, this may have been down to the vents being slightly open and as the rain was almost horizontal, would explain the rain getting in.
We have thoroughly enjoyed using this, our first tent, it has been warm, dry (ish), roomy enough for the 2 of us and so very easy to pitch added to this for £24.99 I don't think you will find a better bargain. We are now looking for a bigger tent that you can stand up in with an area to store more things and sit inside but this tent has been great and would fully endorse it's use for casual campers.

This tent was perfect!
There was only 2 of us using it, as my partner is too tall to fit in smaller tents! But it had room for our double sleeping space, and all of our bags and belongings beside us, with plenty of room left.
We bought it in the half price sale so it may go back to full price (£48.89).
Was very easy to put up, we have never put up a tent before so the instructions helped a lot, and were very easy to understand. The porch area was very useful for shoes etc, no room for chair etc, but good for shade in the sun.
It stayed quite cool in the sun during the day (it is quite a pale colour) and it kept us very dry in the rain!
The only thing we noticed was the top covering didn't seem to fit completely, it was a struggle getting the pegs in the ground, and tying it to the main tent!
But overall a very good tent if your going on odd weekend trips like us!
Now we just need to figure out how to get the tent back in the bag!
